About the event

Ever wondered about the stars and constellations and wanted to find out more? Take some time out with a star gazing experience at Howe of Torbeg! Spend time in a gorgeous rural location & learn how to find key objects and constellations in the night sky on your own.

Scotland has some of the best dark skies in Europe, including across the Cairngorms National Park, where Howe of Torbeg is situated, with simply amazing star gazing opportunities. A dark sky area is an area with exceptional dark skies and little to no light pollution.

Simple & accessible, looking at the stars and learning a bit about them is the perfect way to get away from it all for a few hours, & spend some time in nature.

Stargazing is the perfect date night, or chance to do something different with friends and family. A stargazing experience makes a great gift, or just treat yourself!

Our stargazing evenings run in small groups of up to 10 people and last for about 2 hours.

On the night, we’ll gather in our Wee Studio for an interactive presentation, introducing you to the night sky. This is followed by an outdoor fire bowl & hot chocolate to keep you cosy & then a guided walk up the Glen to see the stars. Looking at the night sky will be a group experience guided by laser pointer.

No queuing for telescopes, we’ll be observing in the great outdoors, away from buildings.

We'll show you how to use stargazing apps on your smartphone, and will let you know which free ones to install, before the event.

You'll go home with a printed star chart for the month of the event, to help you remember what you've seen, and a special souvenir of the evening – a wooden pinhole bauble showing the Plough. A perfect keepsake.

In the event of poor visibility or bad weather there will still be lots of star gazing activities and learning we can do! Events will run unless conditions are very poor, & all events are enjoyable, regardless of the conditions. We’ll do everything we can to create a memorable experience for you and your loved ones. Even on a cloudy night, a night time walk up the Glen can be a fascinating experience.

‘To walk the British countryside at night is to enter a dark, adventurous continent from which one returns with an explorer’s tales of wonders...’*

If you like, you can extend the evening with a stay in one of our cosy Glamping Pods or our off-grid Shepherd’s Hut (book seperately).

The perfect way to spend an evening - take some time out in nature, look up & learn your way around the night sky!

Unfortunately we can't accommodate dogs here at Howe of Torbeg, so dogs are not permitted to attend stargazing evenings.

This event is not suitable for children under the age of 10.
